Throughout the day on June 16, 2018 Charley Frances joined the Mural Routes team in restoring the iconic Toronto Rainbow Tunnel. This mural dates back to the 1970s– it was created by B.C. Johnson, a Norwegian teenager who decided to brighten up this section of North York as a memorial for a friend who had recently passed away.

This was originally a piece of “outsider art”/ technically graffiti– as it was not sanctioned by the city and was repeatedly removed (and then repeatedly re-instated by B.C. Johnson).

Eventually, the city came to embrace the colorful creation. Toronto had the rainbow revamped and restored to its original glory in 2013, with the help of Mural Routes.

Located in a charming public park– this restoration day was filled with community conversation. We even had young kids passing through jump in on the painting!
