The Deadline Project

Cleveland City Council recently passed legislation authorizing all non-functioning pay phone boxes to be removed over the next two years.

Why not create something beautiful on these decaying sites before they get demolished?

We’re gathering together a group of artists to paint/ install/ create their own work within these abandoned sites across the city. You can collaborate with others– or do your own thing & have your own space.

*artists as defined by The Deadline Project can be anyone interested in picking up a paint brush, wheat paste, etc. and making some art. This public / open to anyone call is literally open to anyone!

MISSION
Let’s turn decaying phone booths all around the city of Cleveland into art before they get demolished.

CLAIM A LOCATION

  • Check out the Map at the bottom of this page–
  • All phone booths within Cleveland city limits (Cleveland proper) are eligible.
  • IMPORTANT: The phone booth must NOT have an operational phone inside. Be sure to check.
  • Notify us via email which specific phone booth, or several, that you would like to reserve (just so we don’t have any artist overlap). Or if you have no preference, we can send you details on an open location.

INSTALL

  • Everything is completely up to you. There is no approval or submission process. If you would like to spray paint, wheatpaste, install an original work or print, use stickers, install physical items above or below. . . everything is up to you.
  • Just common sense: Don’t damage any bordering property, don’t get paint on the sidewalk, that sort of thing.
  • If you would rather us install, just email us (feel free to reach out to thedeadlineproject@gmail.com and we can figure out specifics)

TIMING

  • You can install/ paint/ create anytime
  • We only ask that you email over a photo of your finished phone booth work to thedeadlineproject@gmail.com

IMPORTANT DISCLAIMERS

  • Since this is a public art project, and subject to the elements, we can’t guarantee the safety of your work. We recommend installing items that you feel comfortable with potentially getting damaged or not returned.
  • Charley Frances and Ali Luckasy-Love (the curator of Phone Gallery in Waterloo), are heading up the project.
  • We don’t expect any issues– but if you’d rather participate anonymously or would rather not do the install yourself, not a problem. Feel free to reach out and we can talk anytime.
  • This project is not affiliated with any formal organization of any kind, and is not sanctioned by the City of Cleveland. All risk is your own.
